The PSL Rheotek range of manual and automated polymer viscometers are suitable for determining the solution viscosity of a wide range of polymers. Solution viscosity can be described as the increase in viscosity of a solvent when a polymer is dissolved in that solvent.

Determination of Dilute Solution Viscosity using glass capillary viscometers.

The PSL Rheotek range of manual and automated polymer viscometers are suitable for determining the solution viscosity of a wide range of polymers. Solution viscosity can be described as the increase in viscosity of a solvent when a polymer is dissolved in that solvent. There are several ways to represent this, including:
 
  • Relative Viscosity
  • Specific Viscosity
  • Reduced Viscosity (viscosity number)
  • Inherent Viscosity (logarithmic viscosity number)
  • Intrinsic Viscosity (limiting viscosity number)
  • K­Value
  • Average degree of polymerization


All of the above properties are determined by measuring the viscosity of a known concentration of polymer dissolved in a solvent. The solution viscosity of a polymer changes with respect to molecular size and weight.

Precision
The precision of solution viscosity results will be dependent upon the variability of the actual polymer itself as well as the variability of the measurement process. Measurement variability can occur in a number of different areas, including preparation of the concentration, control of sample dissolution, temperature of measurement, flow time measurements and calculation of results. RPV­ viscometer systems are designed to minimize measurement variability from each step of the solution viscosity analysis. However, it should be noted that there will always be a degree of variability within the polymer itself.

Standard Polymer & Pulp Viscometer Analyzer

The RPV­2 fully automates the dilute solution viscosity measurement of a wide range of polymers, pulp, cellulose and electrical papers in full compliance with ASTM, ISO and other test methods. Each analyzer is equipped with two automated measuring positions (suitable for ASTM or Din Ubbelohde or Cannon­Fenske Routine viscometer tubes) situated in a liquid temperature controlled bath. Flow times are measured using a nIR detection system suitable for a wide range of polymers. On completion of measurement, samples are removed and all wetted parts of the analyzer are cleaned with a two or optional three stage solvent and air drying programme.

The RPV­2 dual bath analyzer is configured with two liquid temperature controlled baths. Each bath module is equipped with two automated measuring positions (suitable for ASTM or Din Ubbelohde or Cannon­Fenske Routine viscometer tubes). Flow times are measured using a nIR detection system suitable for a wide range of polymers. On completion of measurement, samples are removed and all wetted parts of the analyzer are cleaned with a two or optional three stage solvent and air drying programme.

Polymer Viscometer Analyzer with Auto Sampler

The RPV­2 RSS configuration provides further automation of sample handling with a smart sampler with one or two measuring positions. Samples are automatically loaded, reducing operator exposure to solvents as well as allowing for greater efficiency.

The RPV­2 Auto/PnP Polymer Viscometers are suitable for PET, PVC, PA and other applications. The Auto/PnP configuration provides the highest degree of automation and sample management.

On completion of sample preparation, samples are placed in a holding rack. Each sample is then automatically controlled and is moved to be heated and stirred. The sample is then moved again to the cooling station where it continues to be stirred until it is moved to the sample loading dock. Throughout the process it is possible to control each individual sample in order to maximize efficiency.

The RPV­2 AutoPulpIVA is suitable for determining the Limiting Viscosity Number and degree of polymerization of pulp and cellulose. The AutoPulpIVA configuration provides the highest degree of automation and sample handling.

Pulp samples are initially weighed out and water is dispensed. The vial is then placed on the auto sampler rack and is "water stirred". Under a nitrogen blanket, CED is then added automatically to the wetted sample followed by a further period of stirring. On completion, samples are then automatically loaded into the viscometer.
