T2FM Analytical Ferrography Lab

Kenmerken

Analytical Ferrography lab is a highly specialized tool to determine size, composition and shape of wear particles. The system consists of a ferrogram maker, that aligns the particles on a substrate according to size and composition, a high magnification bichromatic microscope, a video camera and imaging software.

Whereas the LaserNet Fines is ideally suited to obtain a quick count and classification of wear particles, the Ferrography lab is capable of an extremely detailed analysis of the exact size, composition and shape in those cases where such scrutiny is required, providing priceless information on the cause and severity of ongoing wear. The LNF and T2FM complement each other perfectly : using the LNF for daily screening of routine samples, the T2FM provides the extra precision in those cases where a detailed analysis of the particles is required.

Background

The Spectro T2FM is fast because there is no delay time as sample is pumped onto the ferrogram surface. The T2FM delivers the entire sample and all the particles contained therein onto the ferrogram. A crystal clear rinse is obtained without fail for every ferrogram. There are no last minute drips of oil sample onto the ferrogram leaving distracting halos around the particles when viewed under the microscope. A bichromatic microscope is used to view and examine ferrograms made with the SpectroT2FM Q500. The bichromatic microscope is equipped with both reflected (red) and transmitted ...

... (green) light sources so that the ferrogram may be illuminated from both above and below the microscope stage. With bichromatic illumination, metal particles, which reflect light, appear bright red, whereas nonmetallic particles appear green because light transmits through them. A video camera connected to a computer displays, prints, stores and retrieves ferrographic images. Comparison of old ferrograms with ferrograms from recent lubricating oil samples allows determination of evolving wear modes inside a machine or engine.
